This is a sprint course to the inshore yachtman's diploma step 1 (Seglarintyg 1). We meet two times: a theoretical evening course online, usually on Tuesday before the course, as well as a full day in the archipelago.

 entry level (seglarintyg 1)

Online + Nynäshamn, Stockholm archipelago
1 evening + 1 full day in the archipelago
 from 2500 SEK

 For whom?

First-timers and beginners. This course suits you if you want to:

  • start exploring sailing
  • be a competent crew member
  • confidently carry out manoeuvres (tacking, jibing etc.)
  • understand the sailing vocabulary
  • become certified quickly & efficiently (helpful for boat rentals both nationally & internationally)
  • have a good understanding of the principles of sailing
  • go on sailing trips with friends / family as a crew member

Note: if you wish to captain your own sailing outings we recommend our beginner PLUS course.

 Course requirements

No prior experience is required, just an interest in sailing.

 Course goal

NFB Official: to be able to control a small sailing boat in sheltered waters in good weather, and to have an understanding of the boat as well as fundamental sailing manoeuvres on calm seas.

Our take: to be a valuable asset to a sailing crew by being able to assist in all maneuvers / to have an understanding of the fundamentals of sailing / this last one may be a stretch for most people, however it is possible: to control a small sailing boat with help of a crew (which can be friends/family) in sheltered waters & good conditions. If this is your goal however, we recommend looking at our beginner PLUS course.

After the course you will have the possibility to do an examination for the inshore yachtman's diploma step 1 (Seglarintyg 1) with us.

 Course plan

The course content is focused on the certificate requirements of the inshore yachtman's diploma step 1 (Seglarintyg 1). We don't cover any topics outside of the certificate. It's a no-nonsense sprint to the certificate. Covered elements:

  • Understanding the boat's main elements (motor, pumps and vanes, mast, cables, sails, lines & accessories)
  • Inspect them for a safe recreational sailing trip
  • Tying up a few of the most useful sailing knots
  • Knowing the main sailing vocabulary such as tacking, jibbing, starboard...
  • Motoring in and out of the harbor
  • Knowing the points of sail and how to set the mainsail and jib accordingly
  • Adjusting the boat speed using the sails
  • Understanding when & how to tack and jibe
  • Anchoring the boat, both on an island and in deeper water (aka lunch break)

If you wish to captain your own trips we recommend looking at our beginner PLUS course as it offers a broader variety of topics as well as more practice hours on the water.
